Curriculum Statement & Information

The National Curriculum has English, Maths and Science at its core, these subjects are the ‘building blocks’ of education. ‘The national curriculum provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to be educated citizens. It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said; and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.’ (National Curriculum Framework). At Reinwood we strive to empower every child to become the best person that they can be, with the knowledge, skills and sensitivity needed to develop into an educated and caring individual, ready to embark on the next stage of life’s journey.

We aim:

To provide the highest standard of education for all our pupils, academically, physically, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally.
To help pupils to develop lively, enquiring minds, the ability to question and argue rationally, solve problems and apply themselves to a range of tasks.
To help pupils to use language and numbers effectively.
To foster children’s self esteem and support them in their achievements and aspirations in order for them to reach their full potential.
To promote respect and equality for all.
To help pupils to acquire the knowledge and skills relevant to adult life in an ever changing modern Britain.
To enable children to understand right from wrong and have respect for democracy and the law.
To help pupils understand the world in which they live and the interdependence of individuals groups and nations.

The curriculum should develop the whole person, knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes. It should be broad, balanced and have clear progression. It should be filled with rich first hand purposeful experiences which are embedded in to the long term memory and most of all it should be responsive to individual needs and interests. Our Curriculum is therefore underpinned by the following:

Opportunities for children to think for themselves, reflect and question. To solve problems and face challenges.
The belief that reading is highly valued and the importance of a lifelong love of reading. Oracy and the development of the spoken word will be encouraged in every aspect of school life.
An understanding of the importance of and the place of maths in everyday life.
Lessons which develop skills, understanding and an appreciation of science, humanities, sports and the arts.
High expectations in all aspects of school life.
An understanding and expectation that school, teachers, parents, pupils and the community will work together.
Opportunities for children to understand their role in a global community by widening their understanding of their own and other faiths and cultures.
Support to develop our children’s emotional and social well-being and their readiness to learn.

We encourage children to take responsibility for their own learning, to be involved as far as possible in reviewing the way they learn, and to reflect on how they learn, what helps them learn and what makes it difficult for them to learn. They tell us that they like to learn in the following ways:

Debates, role plays and presentations
Working in friendship groups
